DOHA: Aspire Zone was at the heart of the fourth National Sport Day celebration yesterday, bustling with activities for families and individuals of all ages and nationalities — The wide range of sport activities and competitions catered for all social segments and age groups drove thousands of families into action throughout the day — despite the dusty weather.
“I’m amazed by how many Qataris and residents are here. They understand the message and the vision behind National Sport Day. People every year are becoming more aware of the importance of sports. I think the whole society got the message and as Minister of Youth and Sports I’m very happy,” said H E Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali after launching the ‘Family Cycling’ initiative, a joint campaign by Aspire Zone and the ministry.
The Minister, along with French Ambassador Eric Chevallier and Qatar Cycling Federation Head Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Thani rode the first family bikes.
“The ministry is keen to participate in the day which serves the important goal of promoting healthy lifestyles and educating the community on the importance of taking care of their health and fitness. The ministry is working on turning sports into a permanent culture in our society, not just a one-day event,” said the Minister who came to Aspire with his family.
Sheikh Khalid said, “We are very happy with the development that sports have seen in our country. When the day was marked for the first time, a limited number of places celebrated it, but now you see everyone celebrating everywhere.
“Aspire Zone continues to be exceptional in organising activities for all sports.”
Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada and Minister of Public Health H E Abdulla bin Khalid Al Qahtani were present.
Khalid Abdullah Al Sulaiteen, CEO, Aspire Zone Foundation,  said: “I am happy to see this large number of people engage in activities. This proves the success of the concept of National Sport Day which the leadership initiated and supported to encourage all people to exercise anywhere throughout the year.”
Over 2,000 people took part in a 3km Fun Run with 32-year-old Moroccan Ahmad Al Sabbar finishing first. Synchronised swimming sessions for girls, a first this year, and Zumba classes also saw huge turnout. Beach soccer, football, science activities, a skills development programme, running, throwing, vertical jumping and cycling competitions were also held. The Peninsula
