Moscow--Russia said on Wednesday it would consider any request from Greece for financial aid as Athens seeks to renegotiate a massive bailout with its European partners.
"If there are any appeals... from the Greek government, these appeals of course will be considered," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a visit by Greek counterpart Nikos Kotzias.
Greece's Defence Minister Panos Kammenos had warned Tuesday that if negotiations with the eurozone fail, Athens will go to a "Plan B", which could involve asking for funding from the China, Russia or the United States.
But Kotzias later played down his colleague's comments, saying the new anti-austerity government wanted to resolve its debt problems with Europe.
Athens has made clear it wants to cultivate closer ties with Russia, and Kotzias said earlier this month the European Union should avoid "spasmodic" action against Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.
Russia and Greece share historic ties as the majority of the population in both countries are Orthodox Christians.
