New York: Qatar has stressed the need for total elimination of nuclear weapons in accordance with the provisions of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and implementation of commitments made by relevant states.
Qatar also emphasised that achieving these goals requires the political will of the states concerned without which the current stalemate cannot be overcome.
This came in a statement delivered by Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Thani, member of the Qatari delegation to the United Nations during the substantive session of the Disarmament Commission, which began its work at the UN headquarters in New York yesterday.
Sheikh Ahmed said Qatar is keen to participate in the commission’s meetings which provide opportunity for states to exchange views to achieve the desired progress towards the objectives of the commission.
He said the importance attached by Qatar to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation is based on its obligations as a party to the NPT in 1999.
He said Qatar renews its commitment to the treaty as the basis for stability in the world, particularly the Middle East. QNA
