DOHA: The winter market of Al Mazru’a, Al Khor and Al Zakhira sold 60 tonnes of vegetables and 18 tonnes of fruits within the three days of marketing the local agricultural products. The newly opened yard of Al Wakra also sold in its first three days of opening 35 tonnes of vegetables, 29 tonnes of fruits and 508 domestic birds.
The vegetable yards which operate three days a week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) will resume today in Um Salal Al Mazrua’a yard, Al Khor, Al Zakhira and Al Wakra.
These seasonal vegetable yards have become popular as local farms began to compete with provision of offers in prices and quality of vegetables and fruits they sell in the market, where price of lemon box reached QR13, kiwi box QR10, and Tangerine QR20.
During last week marketing days, 20 of the local farms showed competition in their supply in terms of quality and prices what encouraged consumers to regularly visit these yards. The yards also have begun to sell fishes, chickens, and different type living domestic birds with affordable prices comparing to the imported ones.
The Ministry of Environment added last year to Al Mazrua’a vegetable yard at Um Salal special section for selling livestock from the local animal farms including sheep, goats, cows and camels.
