DOHA: As Qatar’s projected demand for primary construction materials is expected to hit a peak in next two years, two key market players have announced their decisions to boost production capacity of washed sands.
According to the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS), the country’s demand for washed sand is projected to jump by 106 percent this year.
Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) yesterday announced its support of the local market by raising its washed sand supply to the market by 15,000 tonnes a day as well as using its strategic pile by adding 18,000 tonnes a day. This will help boost QPMC’s washed sand distribution to more than 33,000 tonnes a day.
Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company (QIMC), another key market player, announced that its sand treatment plant (Qatar Sand Treatment Plant) will increase its production capacity up to 30,000 tonnes a day during the week, where the quarantine by the Ministry of Environment will reflect positively on the availability of washed sand in the market in the usual way.
This decision by QPMC to increase its production capacity of washed sand follows the low production in Qatar Sand Treatment Plant, which resulted in shortages in the amount of washed sand production in the market. Thus, QPMC increased its production capacity and raised the supply of washed sand to more than 15,000 tonnes a day, as well as the use of strategic stockpiles to meet the needs of the market; controlling the prices and shortening the queuing time of hundreds of trucks waiting to collect sand.
Abdulrahman Al Ansari, CEO, Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company, praised QPMC for its support and contribution, “I would like to thank QPMC for its invaluable support in this critical time, this initiative demonstrates high professionalism, efficiency and collaboration. I am extremely proud of this partnership sharing the same vision to put the country’s needs first and actively contribute to the national development of the State of Qatar.”
QPMC was established on the instruction of the Government in 2006 to ensure supplies of building materials to the local market. The company now owns and operates strategic assets within Qatar, and provides complete solutions for port management, logistics and supply chain, storage and delivery of key primary materials to meet the Qatar requirements of 2022 and beyond.
A survey conducted by the MPDS on the ‘future demand of primary building materials’ found that in the run up to the 2022 World Cup event, Qatar is set to see a record demand of primary construction materials in the coming few years. According to the survey, the demand for the materials is expected to hit a record peak in 2015-2016. The Peninsula
