Forum to discuss developments in kidney stone surgeries

DOHA: Latest developments in kidney stone surgeries will be discussed at the AUA Segura Conference which begins today at Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). 
The event is being held by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), in collaboration with American Urological Association (AUA).
More than 500 physicians, including participants from outside Qatar, are attending the three-day forum, which ends on Saturday. State-of-the-art presentations will cover advancements in all aspects of stone management, including symptom interpretation, best diagnostic modalities and appropriate treatment selection.
Sixteen surgical operations, ongoing at Hamad General Hospital’s operating theatres, will be shown live to conference participants. The surgeries will be conducted by international surgeons, who will apply new techniques for the first time worldwide. 
On the closing day of the conference there will be a video showing surgeries conducted in Qatar and abroad. 
In addition to participants from HMC and Qatar’s private sector, delegates are arriving from India, Nepal, Russia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, South Africa, Libya, Jordan, Palestine, Yemen, Iraq and GCC countries. 
Internationally renowned speakers are from the US, Canada and Europe. Dr Adel Al Daleel from Saudi Arabia will speak on ‘Kidney stones in Islamic medicine history’.
A flex robotic surgery will be conducted for the first time in Qatar and the region during the conference. Urology and nephrolith surgeons from the US, including Prof Arthur Smith, a US-based nephrolith surgeon, Prof Tracseur (France), Prof De La Rosette (Holland), Prof Mahesh Dessayeh (India) and Prof Jihad Tawook (US) are participating.
Dr Khalid Al Rumaihi, Head,  Urology Surgery Section, HMC, and Conference Chairman, said this is the second time that the biennial conference is being held outside the US.
He said  advancements in nephrolith (related to kidney stones) minimal invasive surgeries at HMC is the reason the conference is brought to Qatar. An exhibition of latest equipment, technologies and medications in the field of urolithiasis is being held on the sideline. The Peninsula
