DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) and Gaza Municipality have honoured technical and engineering teams that worked during the war on the conclave early last July which left more than 2,200 dead and 17,200 homes destroyed.
Over 900 workers attended the ceremony.
Dr Akram Nassar (pictured), Head, QRC Office, Gaza, said QRC helped alleviate the suffering of Gaza people during the war, with an urgent water network maintenance project to resume drinking water supply to about 200,000 people.
“During the war, QRC implemented urgent relief interventions, mainly in the health, water and sanitation sectors, to enable them to keep providing basic services.
“We are working on an urgent water and sewerage system support project in Gaza and Jabalia, with funding from the Maldivians.
“Weeks ago, we initiated a project to build the 11th sewage pumping station in western Gaza, with funding from the Programme of the GCC for the Reconstruction of Gaza, under the supervision of Islamic Development Bank, to make a paradigm shift in the sector.”
Dr Nassar praised the role of Gaza Municipality staff that worked during the war amid risks and administrative and technical staff for contributing to the success of QRC projects in Palestine.
“Gaza Municipality teams achieved our mission of standing by the community during the war, protected the internal front by removing the rubble resulting from bombardment, and continued to work despite the Israeli aggression and repeated threats to prevent them from fulfilling their responsibilities,” said Nezar Hegazi, Head of the municipality.
He recognised QRC efforts to implement projects to help the municipality overcome problems, by providing water and sanitation pumps and equipment.
Nehad Al Mughni, General Manager, Engineering and Maintenance, said civic staff repaired water and sewage pipelines in several residential districts, thanks to QRC’s urgent drinking water system maintenance project despite the airs trikes. He said municipality staff continued to work though some of their members were martyred, and affirmed that the municipality will continue to pursue its mission by virtue of efforts of those who believe in the Palestinian cause and people. The Peninsula
