Doha: The 6th Scientific Conference of the Gulf Geographical Society concluded its work in Katara recently by issuing and adopting a number of recommendations aimed at advancing the role of the Gulf geographical societies.

This is to highlight the role of geography as an applied science in preserving the cultural dimensions in the countries of the region.

The conference called for the establishment of a spatial database and an Arab Gulf atlas to document tangible and intangible cultural heritage in the countries of the region, marketing conferences and programmes of Gulf and Arab societies and finding electronic links to activate them on digital social media.

This is in addition to working on submitting a proposal to establish a unified Gulf centre concerned with culture in countries.

It also proposed a centre which will be located in the Cultural Village, Katara in coordination with the Gulf Geographical Society.

The conference also called for holding a meeting that includes all the heads of the geographical societies in the Arab world to set up procedural mechanisms for cooperation and integration among them, provided that the Gulf Geographical Society and the Egyptian Geographical Society adopt this coordination.

Meanwhile, participants praised the outputs of the conference work, which contributed to the exchange of experiences and knowledge, discussion of ideas and opinions, reaching solutions, raising awareness of linking geographical sciences with culture, and clarifying the role of geography and geographers in culture and its industry in the Arab world.
