Poll registrar summons 47 candidates

SAN CARLOS CITY: Subpoenas were issued by the city election registrar to 47 candidates in the Sangguniang Kabataan elections for submitting questionable documents during registration last month. Election lawyer Jennifer Balarbar said those issued subpoenas on Thursday were told to appear for clarification at Sangguniang Panlungsod session hall on August 13. Balarbar said of the 47 candidates, 12 had registered twice; 16 were underage and 17 overage; one had no supporting documents while another did not appear during registration. The lawyer said authorities would they would find out how the candidates committed such offences. 

Firecracker sparks blasts

ZAMBOANGA CITY: A series of blasts rocked this port city when a pyrotechnics shop exploded on Friday night, triggering panic among residents, authorities said yesterday. No one was hurt from the blasts, which sparked a fire that razed a two-storey building housing the pyrotechnics shop, a flower shop, and a bakery in Barangay Guiwan at about 9pm. The two-storey residential building adjacent to the blast site was completely gutted, while a jeep parked in front of the pyrotechnics shop was damaged. The explosions were so powerful that they  ripped metal trashes, beams and walls of the building owned by a local Mary Omar.

Terminal 3 work on track

MANILA: The P1.9bn ($45m) rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 is on track and expected to be completed by the third quarter of next year, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications. The completion of the project is seen to double the capacity of the terminal to 13 million passengers per year. Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said the government has reached an agreement with Takenaka Corp to complete the project in 12 months and make it operational by August 2014. The project includes integration of airport systems like baggage handling, flight information displays, computer terminals, gate coordination, and fire protection systems, among others.
