ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has appreciated the decision of Cabinet Division Secretary Nargis Sethi of implementing new dress code for the bureaucracy with the objective of adopting simple lifestyle and saving energy. For the first time in the history of the country, Nargis Sethi on October 9 issued circular of the Cabinet Division titled ‘Economy in use of energy’.

The Capital Development Authority, National Commission for Human Development, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, Pakistan International Airlines, National Language Authority, Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, Printing Corporation of Pakistan as well as the Ministry of Water and Power and its all attached departments will have to implement the new dress code, which has also been approved by the prime minister.

Through this dress code, which has initially been enforced in two ministries, not only electricity would be saved but the bureaucracy would also be convinced to adopt a simple lifestyle and it would boost the self-confidence of bureaucracy. Sources said that simple dress codes have been introduced in many countries, including Japan, under the energy-saving campaigns.

“Keeping in view, the energy shortfall, henceforth, all officers/officials in the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Water and Power and their allied organisations/departments, all over the country, shall wear trousers and shirts or shalwar qameez with waist coat during the ongoing season.

Ties and coats are to be avoided in summer season. In winter, the officers shall wear warm woollen clothing and/or coats/jackets over trousers or over shalwar qameez,” the Cabinet Division circular stated.

“This is to ensure that unnecessary electricity is not wasted due to undue use of ACs, fans and heaters (in winters),” it added, stressing that strict compliance might be ensured in respective offices and a report be submitted by the concerned administrative wings of the two divisions and the heads of organisations/departments of the Cabinet Division and Water and Power Division.
