Qatar plans to encourage use of CNG in transport

DOHA: Qatar plans to encourage the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the transport sector as an environmentally cleaner alternative to conventional fuels like petrol and diesel.

CNG, which currently finds widespread use in the transport sector in developing countries, is not only cleaner but also cheaper than diesel and petrol.

The use of CNG in Qatar may, however, take some time as plans seem to be at a conceptual stage.

Qatar also has plans in place to make investments in the power sector overseas, for which a joint venture is being set up between utility producers Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC), and Qatar Holding Company (the investment arm of the Qatar Investment Authority, the sovereign wealth fund) and Qatar Petroleum International.

The above two proposals were discussed at a meeting of the Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investment here yesterday and the joint venture was approved. The Emir and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investment,
