Energy talks   in US today

WASHINGTON: The fifth US-Pakistan Energy Working Group, part of the Strategic Dialogue framework between the two countries, will meet in Washington today. “This working group fosters cooperation on Pakistan’s energy sector, including power generation, renewable energy, gas, and reform priorities,” sources here say.

The Strategic Dialogue framework between the two countries was re-energised during Secretary of State John Kerry’s August visit to Islamabad. It will be co-hosted by Ambassador Carlos Pascual, US Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs, and Pakistani Ministers of Petroleum and Natural Resources Khaqan Abbasi and of Water and Power Khwaja Asif.

“The US and Pakistan have worked closely and on a sustained basis to better develop and diversify Pakistan’s energy sector, a key priority of the Pakistani government and people,” Office of the State Department spokespersons noted.

The US has supported increased energy generation, improved distribution, management, revenue collection, and policy reform.

Since October 2009, the US has helped add 1,000 megawatts of capacity to Pakistan’s grid enough to supply electricity for more than 16 million people, the State Department said.
