Kolkata: A police sub-inspector was shot dead and another man injured in firing by miscreants during a clash between student activists of the Trinamool Congress and the Congress at a college here yesterday, police said. Two accused were arrested.
Tapas Chowdhury, a sub-inspector attached to the city police’s Special Branch, was shot at from close range while trying to control the clashing students in Harimohan Ghose College in the Garden Reach area of west Kolkata, police said.
The violence erupted over the issue of picking up nomination forms for the students’ union election, police said.
Suddenly, crude bombs were hurled and there was also gun fire, V S Nesakumar, deputy commissioner of police, port division, told reporters. Magsaysay award-winning writer Mahasweta Devi expressed sadness over the
