DOHA: The Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra Diaz paid a visit last week to the Cuban Hospital at Dukhan.

The 75-bed Cuban Hospital was established as a joint venture between Qatar and the Cuban government. The hospital serves the growing population in the western districts of Qatar and the oil fields, and is manned by nearly 400 healthcare professionals from Cuba.

The delegation headed by the Deputy Foreign Minister was received by top officials of HMC and The Cuban Hospital, including Philip Lowen, CEO of The Cuban Hospital; Dr Luis Manuel Nafeh Abi Rezk, Servicios Medicos Cubanos (SMC) Representative in the Gulf and Chief of the Medical Cuban Mission in Qatar; Dr Tania Maria Fernandez, Medical Director of The Cuban Hospital;  Steve Phoenix, Chief of General Hospitals and Organisation Development; and Ali Janahi, Group Chief of Business Services at HMC.

Ernesto D Plasencia Escalante, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Qatar, Vladimir Gonzez Quesada, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Division of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other officials from the Cuban Mission joined the Deputy Foreign Minister during his visit.

Fernandez gave presentation for the group on the evolution of the hospital since its official opening, highlighting key achievements such as the opening in 2012 of the Outpatient and Inpatient Departments, surgical activities and maternity services, followed in 2013 by the opening of a full Emergency Department and endoscopy services.

The future plans include opening of four operating theatres, developing the mammography service and planning for Joint Commission International Accreditation in 2014, said Fernandes.

“I feel very pleased to have had the opportunity of listening to your presentations and to all your comments, and to see the high level of motivation and enthusiasm of the management and staff working here, and all the parties involved in this joint effort. I was recommended to make time and make sure that I would come and see the hospital, and I agreed because we had some feedback on your work and your achievements and on the importance of the hospital and the quality of the facilities,” said the Deputy Foreign Minister speaking in Spanish.
