DOHA: Abdullah Al Tamimi made Qatar proud in the US by reaching the final of the Any Presence Squash Championship at Mclean, recently.
According to information made available here yesterday, fourth-seeded Al Tamimi displayed an impressive performance in the tournament to reach the final, outwitting tough opponents in earlier stages of the championship.
He suffered defeat against Pakistan’s Farhan Zaman in a thrilling final.
It was not an easy sailing for the Pakistani as the Qatari gave him a run for his money before losing the final 3-2.
The title brought a two-year title drought to an end for Zaman.
The 22-year-old, who had already shown promising signs that he was approaching some of his best form after a semi-final finish at the Wasatch Funds Salt Lake City Open last week.
After losing first two sets 8-11, 8-11, the third seed Zaman came from behind strongly to topple his opponent, winning next three sets and title 11-9, 11-6 and 11-7.
In his recent interview, Zaman said that he had decided to prolong his stay in the United States so he will not be available to play the Chief of Air Staff Squash Championship in Pakistan and he will also skip President Gold Cup International Championship in Islamabad next month to play the events in the US. “A number of back-to-back high-profile events are played on regular basis here in this emerging market. It would help me to improve my rankings that is highly important for me,” he said before adding: “I really want to break into world’s elite group of players and I would also get much-needed exposure while playing alongside the best in the field,” he said.
