Vilnius: Interconnection and power plant maintenance, coupled with low wind generation early in the week, pushed Lithuania's electricity prices to their highest level in more than six months, Litgrid said on Monday.
The average wholesale electricity price in Nord Pool's Lithuanian bidding area rose by 48 percent week-on-week to 126 euros (145.8 U.S. dollars) per megawatt-hour (MWh) in the October 6-12 period.
"Last week, we recorded particularly high prices not seen since March," Deividas Siksnys, head of market development at the Lithuanian power transmission system operator, said in a press release.
Siksnys said the price surge was mainly caused by the annual maintenance of a 700 MW interconnection with Sweden, adding, "This link normally allows the import of large amounts of cheaper electricity."
Litgrid said the interconnection was brought back online last Friday, two days ahead of schedule, helping to stabilize prices at the beginning of this week.(1 euro = 1.16 dollar)
