DOHA: Max Eastley, a world renowned British sound and visual artist, is set to stage an exhibition and performance at the Katara Art Center (KAC) as part of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture.
An active artist since 1972, Eastley’s work consists of performance and installation pieces that can be described as poetic and dream-like.  The work itself is often constructed of simple materials, drawn together through combining the ideas of instability and equilibrium in nature with the principles behind musical instruments.
The artist, through his investigations of naturally-driven instruments such as the Aeolian Harp — an instrument driven by the wind — have led to an exploratory and sensitive approach to creating installations and performance.
This style can be characterised as being less attached to conventional forms of music performance or art installations than to objects and experiences that are between the constructed and the natural.
Opening on Sunday, the exhibition features a series of new installation works drawn from locally sourced materials. The unique work created for this exhibition will reflect the artist’s responses to the properties of materials found in the city. The works, developed onsite prior to the exhibition opening, reflect the artist’s immediate approach and response to the materials chosen, the location, and the city.
A pioneer in performance of sound art, the artist’s style uses elements of pure sound, generated by everyday materials, to create otherworldly or natural tones that encourage the listener to explore. The performance will take place as part part of KAC’s sound, performance, and music series, Offbeat. In addition, the artist is presenting an artist workshop on Monday, a unique opportunity for Doha-based artists to engage with an internationally respected artist. Registration for this workshop is required, and spaces are limited.
