ISLAMABAD: The General Headquarters (GHQ) of Pakistan army has written a letter to he Interior Ministry seeking a review of the ban on police participation in United Nations peacekeeping mission abroad, it was learnt.
In the letter, chief of the general staff stated that at present Pakistan had largest share in UN peacekeeping mission around the world and its contributions in the realm were admired at international level.
“It has only been made possible due to contributions of highly trained and professional military and police peacekeepers,” the letter added.
Interior Ministry’s recent decision to discontinue the deployment of police peacekeepers for UN missions on the pretext of precarious internal security has been communicated to the office of the UN.
The chief of General Staff maintained that the decision might also raise unnecessary alarm about Pakistans internal security situation at international level, carrying away the chance of securing additional slots in UN both for army and police.
“Vacancies once surrendered in a particular mission cannot be secured in future,” the letter stated, adding that as UN always has the leverage to select individuals from a large pool of nominations received from the entire world including war torn countries like Congo, Mali and Sudan.
