Doha: Al Tahadi Diabetes Camp, organised by the Qatar Diabetes Association, a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, was launched yesterday and targets young people living with type 1 diabetes.

The camp will continue until March 17 through remote visual communication and some activities will be in attendance, with about 37 participants aged between 12 and 15, from Qatar.

Al Tahadi camp is one of the highlights of QDA events targeting adolescents living with type 1 diabetes to help them lead healthier, happier, and more productive lives through good diabetes management.

The camp’s aim is to encourage the teens on taking a positive and proactive attitude in handling their disease. It consists of diabetes self-care education sessions, simulating real life situations to apply problem solving all in a fun entertaining atmosphere.

In collaboration with The Generation Amazing; Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, they will conduct two football sessions: one for girls and one for boys on the last day.

Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction where the body’s defence system attacks the cells that produce insulin. As a result, the body produces very little or no insulin. The exact causes of this are not yet known but are linked to a combination of genetic and environmental conditions.

Type 1 diabetes can affect people at any age, but usually develops in children or young adults. People with type 1 diabetes need daily injections of insulin to control their blood glucose levels.

Dr. Abdulla Al Hamaq, Executive Director of Qatar Diabetes Association, said, “People with type 1 diabetes need daily insulin treatment, regular blood glucose monitoring and a healthy lifestyle to manage their condition effectively, and this is the goal of Al Tahadi camps where we provide education and training on good diabetes control.”

“By maintaining good control of this condition, people diagnosed with diabetes lead a normal productive life and reduce the risk of long-term complications,” Dr. Al Hamaq added.

A team of experts run the camp to help participants learn diabetes self-management.
