Doha: A majority of respondents to an online survey are calling on the authorities to reveal the names of the restaurants and shops violating the consumer protection law and the health and safety rules in the country through media.

In an online weekly survey conducted by Al Sharq, people were asked if there was a need to disclose the names of eateries violating the health rules to which 90 percent of the respondents said ‘yes’. Nine percent said there was no need to reveal their names to the public. Many people also expressed their dissatisfaction at the existing inspection methods, saying the performance of inspectors was not good enough.

On the performance of the inspection campaigns conducted by relevant authorities, 73 percent said their performance was not good, while 19 percent of the respondents said it was ‘okay’. Eight percent remained neutral.

The third question in the survey asked if they felt the violators were strictly monitored, 63 percent said the monitoring was not at all strict and there was a need for more severe penalties.

Many people said the authorities needed to be more cohesive in their efforts, stressing that there was a need to increase the number of inspectors. This would allow officials to keep checks in more areas. People also said that the name of violators should be announced through media.

Jabir Rashid Al Mirri said that there were several violations, especially in the small eateries that are operating in residential areas.

He said while making sandwiches and other food items, many cooks did not take care of hygiene or wear sanitary gloves.

“The inspection should be conducted in cafeterias on daily basis to protect consumer rights,” Al Mirri said. The Peninsula
