Qatar’s green initiatives go on show

The Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman and Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada opening the seventh QP Environment Fair yesterday.

DOHA: The seventh QP Environment Fair, an annual event that showcases the environmental programmes and initiatives in Qatar, was inaugurated by the Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman & Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum H E Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, here yesterday.

In comments he made on the occasion, Dr Al Sada stressed the need for improved national environmental performance and called for “enhanced efforts to protect Qatar’s environment for our children and future generations.” 

He said “the QP Environment Fair represents the comprehensive measures being undertaken by Qatar’s oil and gas sector toward the implementation of environmental objectives outlined by Qatar National Vision 2030.”

The Minister expressed admiration of the wide range of environmental projects on display at the exhibition and expressed confidence that “such projects would make a difference in the effort for sustainable development”.

Held with the theme “Clean Energy for a Sustainable World,” the QP Environment Fair 2013 is  open to the general public from today until April 16 from 8am to 8pm.

Over 35 exhibitors, consisting of QP directorates and departments, its subsidiaries and joint venture partners as well as other oil and gas operators, are taking part in this year’s edition of the event. 

The QP Environment Fair 2013 also features the exhibition stands of government entities, environmental organisations and academic institutions.

Apart from the exhibition, the three-day event includes a wide range of educational and entertaining activities for the benefit of all visitors. These include storytelling sessions, handicraft stations, live performances, as well as dedicated areas highlighting a marine environment, a plantation, and a desert ecosystem. 

An Arabic environmental play, entitled “What is happening on the island?,” is also being staged by Sasol on all days of the event, while an exciting competition called the QP Environment Race will be held on April 15 and 16, with school teams competing with each other in a range of physical and mental tasks. 

The list of participating QP directorates and departments in the QP Environment Fair 2013 includes the Corporate HSE Department, Dukhan Operations, Gas Operations, the HSE Regulations and Enforcement Directorate, Offshore Operations, QP Industrial Cities, QP Refinery, and the Public Relations and Communications Department, which is the main organiser of the event.

Many QP subsidiaries and joint ventures also have a strong presence in the exhibition. These include Dolphin Energy Limited, Gulf Helicopters, Oryx GTL, Qatar Aluminium (Qatalum), Qatar Chemical Company Limited (Q-Chem), Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC), Qatar Fertilizer Company (Qafco), Qatar Fuel (WOQOD), Qatar Fuel Additives Company Ltd. (Qafac), Qatar Petrochemical Company Ltd (Qapco), Qatar Petroleum International (QPI), Qatar Steel, Qatargas Operating Company Ltd. (Qatargas), RasGas Company Limited (RasGas), and SEEF Limited.

In addition, the QP Environment Fair 2013 also features the exhibition stands of many industry stakeholders.
