Doha: The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) will soon introduce a new smart system at several intersections to detect ambulances and other emergency vehicles and give them the green light.
Motorists find it difficult to give way to ambulances in heavy traffic at intersections, especially when the lights are red. Many are also scared of running the red light.
Once the new system is in place, the traffic lights will turn green giving way to an appropaching emergency vehicle, as well as other vehicles waiting in those lanes.
Ashghal has invited tenders to design, install, operate and maintain the new system, Al Sharq reported yesterday.
Under the new system, the movement of emergency vehicles at traffic lights will be monitored at a central control room, giving them way when needed. The testing phase of the project is expected to last for 90 days. Ashghal last year launched the first phase of its Traffic Signals Control Room project by installing 29 CCTV cameras at as many intersections.
The project has been implemented in collaboration with the Traffic Department.
