DOHA: Tips on how to manage personal finances and not rely on bank loans for marriage will be the highlight of a pre-marriage counselling programme that is to start soon.
The five-day session for prospective Qatari brides and grooms will be held by Family Counselling Centre (FCC).
The session, from October 19 to 23, assumes significance as bank debt and financial mismanagement by husbands have been identified as one of the main causes of divorce in Qatar.
The rate of divorce is high and the National Development Strategy (2011-16) calls for checking the trend.
“Participants will be given tips on how to manage household expenses and make some savings from their income,” said Turfa Al Naimi, Counselling Programme Director. “They will also be told about disadvantages of seeking bank loans to finance a lavish marriage.
“We will also tell them why pre-marriage health checks are important for couples wanting to get married.”
In remarks published by Al Sharq yesterday, the official said most young men marrying face this problem of having to repay bank loans from first day after marriage. There are other aspects of marriage that are equally important such as understanding between the husband and the wife and ways to foster it and psychological issues, said Al Naimi.
Pre-marriage counselling for young Qataris is an ongoing programme of FCC and the session will be 20th in the series.
