New Delhi: Results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) examination, through which students gain entry in management institutes, are expected to be announced on January 14, 2014, an official said yesterday. “This year’s testing window was conducted smoothly and the result is likely to be announced on January 14, 2014,” said CAT convenor Rohit Kapoor. The CAT 2013 examination concluded on Monday. This year, a total of 1,94,516 candidates took the tests at 76 test centres across 40 cities. Candidates take the CAT examination to gain entry to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) and several other management institutes.
Gurgaon all set for Rapid Metro
Gurgaon: India’s first private Rapid Metro is set to start operation in Gurgaon in Haryana from today morning, using a common ticketing system with Delhi Metro. In what is expected to change the landscape of Gurgaon, which borders Delhi, Rapid Metro Gurgaon connects with Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line from Sikanderpur station here. The frequency will be one metro train every four minutes. Services will start today at 6am and end past midnight. The fare value will be Rs12. The launch of Rapid Metro will boost connectivity within Cyber City, the corporate and retail hub of Gurgaon.
Infant gets new lease of life
New Delhi: Doctors here gave a new lease of life to a one-month-old infant weighing barely 1.8kg by placing a stent after a blockage was reported in the right ventricle of her heart. “The baby was referred from a government hospital. She had stopped breathing and showed signs of heart problems. After keeping her on a ventilator for almost a month we discovered the artery going towards her lungs obstructed,” said S Radhakrishana, head of department paediatric and congenital heart disease at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute here yesterday. A major surgery like an open heart operation could not be done as the infant’s weight was very less, hence a minimally-invasive procedure was performed on the baby earlier this month.
Azim Premji tops philanthropist list
New Delhi: Wipro chief and IT tycoon Azim Premji tops the list of Indian philanthropists with donations amounting to Rs80bn in the past year, followed by HCL Chairman Shiv Nadar, a report said. Premji, 68, who owns 57 percent of Wipro, has donated 10 percent stake in the company to Azim Premji Foundation that promotes education in rural India, China-based Hurun Report Inc said in its HurunIndia Philanthropy List 2013. Shiv Nadar (68) is the second highest contributor in the list with a donation of Rs30bn.
SC suspends BMC demolition
New Delhi: The Supreme Court yesterday ordered suspension of the demolition of 96 flats of the Campa Cola housing complex in Mumbai till further orders. The apex court bench of Justice G S Singhvi and Justice C Nagappan suspended the demolition of 96 Campa Cola Society flats which were to be pulled down by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on an earlier apex court order. The court ordered the stay of demolition after senior counsel Fali Nariman mentioned the matter before the court. The apex court earlier this year had said that these flats have to be pulled down because of violation by the builders.
