MANILA: Four people were killed and at least four were wounded in a clash yesterday between government troops and leftist rebels in Negros Occidental.
According to Captain Anacito Naz, spokesman for the 302nd Brigade, the firefight started around 8am, local time, in Isabela town after soldiers from the 11th Infantry Battalion learned from residents that there were New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the area.
Naz said the rebels opened fire at the operating troops. The gunfight lasted for more than three hours killing two soldiers, two NPA rebels. Four soldiers were injured. Naz said there were also several NPA rebels who were wounded from the encounter.
Naz said the soldiers were able to capture a rebel camp in San Agustin village. The troops also recovered at the encounter site a calibre 45 pistol with two magazines, five tents, eight backpacks with personal belongings, and rebel documents.
