American School of Doha (ASD) and Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) worked together over the past couple of months to conduct school trips to the preservation as part of the science curriculum of the school.
AWWP is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria and is a well-respected international conservation organisation focusing on breeding and protecting threatened species.
Eight educational tours were planned to reinforce the educational outcome of the school’s science programme. The students were learning about different habitats, threats to those habitats and challenges facing the endangered animals. The students learned how AWWP’s conservation efforts helped safeguard wild animals and protect their existence through conservation, education and other efforts.
AWWP is located near Al Shahaniya. It includes a specialised breeding centre for threatened wild animals.
This year, as a result of the learning experiences at AWWP, the students decided to raise money to support the goals of AWWP.
Recently, ASD students and science coordinator Gabrielle Faull presented a cheque to Tim Bouts, Director of AWWP. The donation was the result of the students organising fundraising activities, including a bake-off and bracelet sale to support AWWP.
One of the students said: “I cannot believe that a centre like this exists in Qatar. The animals are allowed to be as free as possible and all seem very happy to be here. I hope we can come and visit again as this is the best thing I have ever seen in Qatar.”
