DOHA: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) will invite an array of NBA players besides some of the best names in Asia in a special send-off game for national team captain Yaseen Ismail.
Ismail announced his retirement from the sport after 23 years of service with Al Rayyan and the Qatar national side.
Ismail won 46 titles with Al Rayyan and 16 trophies with the Qatar national side.
“We are proud of his Yaseen’s achievements. He has done wonders for the national side and his Al Rayyan club,” Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, QBF President, said.
“We will stage a special send-off game in October‎. The game will be held at Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah multi-purpose hall. Players from the Philippines and other Asian names will join NBA stars at the game,” Sheikh Saoud said.
“This is what the plan is. I think our friends at Al Rayyan have also joined in and they have also formulated some plans to honour Yaseen.
“Al Rayyan’s retired football, handball and basketball ‎players will also attend the game in October,” he said.
“This game is a way of QBF saying ‘thank you’ to Yaseen for his great services. Yaseen has been hired as our technical advisor‎. So he won’t be leaving the game. Al Rayyan has also offered Yaseen some important role and he can choose what he wants to do,” he said.
“Somebody like Yaseen is an example and a role model for the young players. With his positive attitude on and off the court is a huge bonus for any player. We don’t want to lose him,” he said.
“The players all over the country follow his example,” he said. At the same press conference, QBF signed a sponsorship agreement with GulfCrafts to ‘promote and develop’ the sport in Qatar.
“We would like to thank GulfCrafts for their help for the Yaseen’s retirement game and otherwise also,” Sheikh Saoud said.
“This is not the first time that QBF and GulfCrafts have joined hands. They always deliver their best when we do projects with them.‎ God Willing we will continue our partnership.
“Hopefully other companies will also come forward and be part of this game so that we honour Yaseen in the best way possible. Yaseen’s achievements didn’t come easy. He had to sacrifice a lot on the family front. He is barely walking (smiles) since had an injury recently,” he said.
