One killed in flash flood

MANILA: A flash flood triggered by heavy rains hit parts of Davao del Sur, leaving one person dead and affecting four villages.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the flood occurred in Purok Duranta, Barangay Bangkal Proper in Matanao town last Monday at 4.30pm.

NDRRMC spokesman Major Rey Balido said the flood was not related to typhoon Utor, which ravaged parts of Luzon and Visayas this week. A 60-year-old man identified as Erme Esperanza died after he was swept away by floodwaters while tending his carabao.

Militants torch six trucks

NORTH COTABATO: Communist rebels set on fire six trucks of an agricultural firm in an attack on Monday in Matalam town in the second district of the province.

Lt Nash Sema, civil-military operations officer of the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion, said the New People’s Army rebels who attacked the equipment depot of the Sumifru Banana Co in Barangay Bangbang in Matalam, could have come from North Cotabato’s nearby Antipas town.

Barangay officials said the NPA men burned the trucks of the fruit firm after it refused to pay “protection money”.

Authorities nab drug dealers

MANILA: Following the order of Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay to make the presence of the city’s authority felt in the contested Fort Bonifacio City, 12 suspected drug peddlers and users were arrested on Tuesday afternoon in a police operation in Barangay Southside.

According to Makati Anti-Drug Abuse Council, at about 2.30pm, agents supported by the Makati Police swooped down on two houses on Abbot St and Hornet St and arrested the 12 suspected drug peddlers and users.
