LAHORE: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has decided to join the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) Azadi March. The party, which kept its plan secret till the last moment, has also prepared a five-point formula to steer the country out of the political crisis.
A senior JI leader said that a party delegation would join the PTI march in Islamabad. The delegation would most probably be led by its emir, Sirajul Haq, said. He said Imran Khan had rung up Haq before launching the march, again inviting the JI to join the PTI. The PTI chairman was told that a decision to the effect would be taken after internal consultations, he said.
“The party leadership will keep intact its neutrality it managed to establish during the past week. It will join the march at the last moment in Islamabad and Haq is most likely to represent the Jamaat there,” he said.
Haq presented a formula to pull the country out of the quagmire at a press conference.
The points are: recount in the constituencies where alleged rigging took place; earliest possible completion of the task assigned to the Supreme Court commission to probe rigging allegations; reconstitution of the Election Commission which is a national demand; making the parliamentary commission for electoral reforms present its recommendations within three months; and change of government only in accordance with the procedure laid down in the Constitution.
