Kabul: Taliban militants fired at least 12 missiles on US-run Bagram airfield late on Sunday night, local authorities in northern Parwan province of Afghanistan said yesterday..
Officials added that there were no reports of casualties and damage. District chief for Bagram, Abdul Shakoor Qadusi, confirming the report and said militants fired nearly 12 missiles on US-run Bagram air base, however, he said there were no reports of casualties. He said the militants fired the missiles from mountainous regions, and no suspect had been arrested so far.
The Taliban claimed responsibility and said US military forces suffered heavy casualties.
Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, claimed in a statement that Taliban fighters fired 20 missiles on Bagram airfield, and heavy casualties were incurred to US military personnel. He said all missiles landed on residential rooms inside the airfield, and the attacks were carried out amid efforts by the US and its allies for permanent bases in Afghanistan.
He said US war planes carried out strikes following the missile attacks, but the raids did not kill any of the Taliban fighters.
The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force denied Taliban claims regarding casualties.
In a statement, ISAF said, “We can confirm a rocket attack by enemy forces at Bagram Airfield in Parwan, Afghanistan today. The enemy’s efforts were ineffective and there were no ISAF casualties or infrastructure damage as a result of this attack.” It said: “ISAF engaged enemy forces with a precision strike resulting in one enemy killed.” Agencies
