Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) will host the second international conference on water-pipe tobacco smoking (shisha) research on October 26-27.
It is being organized by the Smoking Cessation Clinic, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, American University in Beirut, and New York University.
Latest international studies and research findings will be discussed and participants will have the opportunity to engage further in shisha smoking research. Information on how tobacco smoking affects the smoker’s health will also be presented. Dr. Ahmed Al Mulla, Head of the clinic, said over 100 consultants and specialists from Qatar and abroad are expected to attend.
Speakers include Dr. Hajar Ahmad Hajar, Health Affairs Consultant to the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Dr. Tawfiq bin Ahmad Khowja, Director-General, Executive Board of GCC Health Ministers’ Council.
Other speakers are from consultants from World Health Organisation (WHO) and US-based National Cancer Institute, researchers from the US, the UK, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Yemen, Bahrain, and Morocco.
A specialised workshop will review research methods in the field of smoking cessation, particularly shisha smoking, on October 25 to set the tone for the conference, said Dr. Al Mulla.
He said HMC would also attend the 16th international conference on smoking cessation, ‘Smoking or Health? in Abu Dhabi in March.
The three-yearly conference, hosted by WHO, is the first of its kind in the Arab world.
