Doha: As Qatar prepares to host the 2014 ITU Telecom World Conference with the support of Ooredoo, organisers have confirmed participation of some of the world’s largest technology and telecom companies.
Being held for the first time in Doha, the event will provide an update on new developments in communication technology, and explore how these are transforming our lives, with a focus on areas being deployed in Qatar and the wider region.
In particular, new innovations in so-called smart technology – including smart city, smart building and smart stadium technology – will be on display for the first time. Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Intel, ZTE, Nokia, Huawei Technologies, and Ericsson are among the leading companies that have confirmed participation at the event, which will take place from December 7 to 10.
Smart city technology will use latest innovations to make people’s lives easier, greener and more sustainable. Many new developments will use smart technology to manage traffic flow, power access, and security from central operation centres, providing greater efficiency and effectiveness.
Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani, CEO, Ooredoo Qatar, said: “We are working with some of the world’s leading companies to develop bespoke solutions for Qatar’s key strategic projects.
“This involves cutting-edge contributions by companies like Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Intel, ZTE, Nokia Huawei Technologies, and Ericsson – supported by the industry insight and local knowledge of Ooredoo.
“The conference will offer a major display of this collaborate approach and provide an insight into the next generation of technology that will help build Qatar’s smart buildings, smart stadiums  and smart offices of the future,” he added. Ooredoo will host an ‘Imaginarium’ which promises to be a unique experience for visitors and delegates.
The ‘Imaginarium’ will enable visitors to experience new-wave technologies and see how they will change life in Qatar for the better.
ITU Telecom World is the leading platform for the global ICT community to debate the future of the sector, network at the highest level and showcase products, solutions and investment opportunities. It draws a mix of public and private sectors representing emerging and developed markets from around the world.
The previous edition of the conference took place in Bangkok, Thailand, last year and witnessed over 6,000 participants from 153 countries. Qatar was selected as host for the ITU Telecom World 2014 following a competitive selection process among several bidding ITU member states, with ictQATAR asking Ooredoo to organise the event on Qatar’s behalf.
