KARACHI: At least seven people were wounded in three separate bomb attacks targeting Shia Muslims in Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi late Wednesday, police said.
“These were low-intensity blasts, a total of seven people have been injured,” senior police official Aamir Farooqi said, adding that the injured were security officers.
The blasts took place as members of a minority Shia community were holding processions on the eighth day of the holy month of Muharram, when Shias mourn the seventh century martyrdom of Hussain, the grandson of prophet Mohammad, along with his family members.
Shias in Pakistan have been frequently targeted by sectarian extremists during Muharram.
The first bomb Wednesday injured two people in central Karachi as Shias were gathering near a shrine, Farooqi said.
Minutes later, another bomb went off as rescue workers, police and media reached the site of the first blast, injuring four people including police.
