DOHA: Well-known Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif will inaugurate a cricket tournament between four expatriate communities on Qatar National Day, at the West End Park Cricket Stadium.
The tournament between teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh communities is organised by the Committee of Associated Activities for Qatar National Day celebrations and managed by the Laggan Cricket Club.
Each team will play a 20 over match (T20) on a knock out basis. The first two matches will be played between all the four teams and winning teams will play in the final match, said President of Lagaan Cricket Club Azim Abbas at a press conference yesterday.
The tournament will begin at 8am and the final match will be played between 2pm and 5pm.
The Committee of Associated Activities for Qatar National Day has announced prizes amounting to QR15,000. The winning team will receive QR7000, the runner up will get QR4,000 and each participating team will get QR2,000.
The trophy for the winners was also unveiled during the press conference. A man of the match award will be given to the best player while players will wear jerseys with the ‘One Love’ Qatar National Day logo during the tournament.
Gates one, three and five will be open for the general spectators and gate seven will be exclusively reserved for families as that’s the designated stand for families and children. A team of volunteers has been formed with community members representing the four countries to manage the gates, spectators and stands.
The entire stadium will be decorated with Qatar National flags, music by a DJ as in IPL and a raffle draw will give prizes of TVs, mobile phones, DVD players, watches and home appliances
Coupons will be given to each spectator entering the stadium. The draw will be held after every match.
Free Transport
There will be free transport for families to reach the event venue.
Buses will be deployed to pick up family’s from DPS Wakra, FFC Airport and Home Centre near Jaidha Fly Over at 10am and 1pm. Buses will return at 7pm from the specially designated parking area provided for busses inside the stadium arena.
Qatar National Day events for expatriate communities will also be held at Al Rayyan Sports Club, Al Wakra Sports Club and Al Khor Sports Club.
Addressing another meeting on organising committee of activities associated to Qatar National Day, Colonel Abdullah Al Muftah, the Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Interior (MOI) said, “the committee in cooperation with the Asian communities residing in the country have worked to prepare programmes with artistic, cultural and sports activities that present a part of the heritage and cultures.”
Activities for Indian and the Sri Lankan communities will be held in the West End Park with cultural and sports events with performances by school students.
Al Wakra Sports club has been allocated to the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities and events will be held by Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia expatriates at Al Rayyan Sports Club.
Al Khor Sports Club will host events for the Nepalese community and residents of the area.
