The Science Education and Human Health Activity will engage 15 students from five Independent high schools.
DOHA: A high school activity to be held next week by Qatar University is set to provide an in-depth learning experience in the health sciences field and awareness of future study and career opportunities for students.
The event organized by QU’s Department of Health Sciences (DHS) at College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) will engage 15 students from five Independent high schools between January 20 and January 23.
The Science Education and Human Health Activity (SEHHA) is the department’s inaugural high-school initiative as part of its mission to expand awareness of the importance of health sciences to the welfare of the Qatari community, and to showcase the myriad of careers that can emerge from pursuing study in related fields. The department hopes to run the activity annually and expand it to more schools and students.
In the four-day activity, students from Amina Bint Wahab, Al Shayma’a, Um Ayman, Al Bayan and Al Resala high schools will participate in organized activities and hands-on lab experiences in DHS’ public health, biomedical sciences and human nutrition programs under supervision of faculty and experts. The aim is to involve the students in scientific inquiry, innovative technology and critical thinking to expand their vision to realize the importance of science in human health and provide them with the opportunity of a real-life campus experience through visits to facilities including the new research building, lecture halls, library, and Food Court.
The students will be introduced to the national health sciences professions through field trips to various medical and research institutions in Qatar, such as the Supreme Council of Health, Al Amal Hospital at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Anti-Doping Laboratory.
“These visits will help the students to envision a career path following their graduation from our programmes”, DHS head Dr Asma Al Thani said.
She added: “SEHHA serves the purpose of stirring students’ enthusiasm toward programs at QU for a future career in health and healthcare. We nurture our youth through their academic lives to become highly skilled professionals with distinguished inner worth and self-confidence. Our priority is to produce a capable and competent generation of healthcare practitioners. We are dedicated to increasing the number of Qatari health professionals, and to expanding awareness of the general public to the importance of health occupations nationwide. This generation carries the future responsibility to guard the community’s health in the event of disasters, threats and wars.”
