Following a successful MotoGP Test, the attention will now turn towards the Moto2 and Moto3 riders who will test their two-wheelers to the limits during three days of final pre-season Test at Qatar's Losail Circuit from today.
Last time out, at the first Official Test in Jerez, it was an EG0,0 Marc VDS invasion at the top of the timesheets as 2014 Moto3 World Champion Alex Marquez set a stunning 1:41.989 to go fastest on the 2017 Kalex, just ahead of teammate Franco Morbidelli.
Reigning Moto3 World Champion Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was still recovering from injury in Jerez, and the South African should be further up to speed in Qatar. Another two high profile debutants are Jorge Navarro (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) - the final man under the pole lap record in Jerez in P5 – and Fabio Quartararo in P8.
Meanwhile, the Valentino Rossi-backed Sky Racing Team VR46 has expanded this year to include the intermediate class – and it’s Moto3 race winner Francesco Bagnaia and compatriot Stefano Manzi charged with the challenge. Bagnaia was just over a second off Marquez in Jerez, with Manzi still recovering from injury.
The Austrian factory, KTM are now the only manufacturer present in every class following the debut of both their Moto2 chassis and the premier class Red Bull KTM Factory Racing project. Highlighting the team’s success, Miguel Oliveira put the new Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 machine in third in Jerez.
Former QMMF rider and the former 125 World Champion Julian Simon replaces injured Iker Lecuona at GaragePlus Interwetten in the Qatar GP, so the Spaniard could well be out on track to test.
The racing fans in Qatar will be in for a treat during the testing sessions as the grandstand entry has been made free. The track activity will take place from 3.00pm to 10.30pm on all three days and fans will have the access to the paddock during the Moto2 / Moto3 Test by showing the MotoGP Ticket for the Grand Prix of Qatar or purchasing the same at the Losail International Circuit.
