DOHA: Everyday items destined to go to the trash bin were repurposed into stunning works of art now on display at an exhibition which opened yesterday at Souq Waqif Art Center.

From glass mosaic and mixed media art to photography and installations, the exhibition was the product of month-long workshops organised by the centre for various ages.

“We conducted five workshops revolving around the theme of environment which was aimed at recycling various materials into works of art using various media and techniques,” Worood Mazin, Art Coordinator at Souk Waqif Art Centre, told The Peninsula at the opening of the expo which marked the conclusion of the workshops.

Around 50 participants many of whom were students from various schools and universities here took part in the month-long workshops on photography, sculpture, mosaic art, accessory making and mixed media art for children.

The workshops, which were held three times a week for free, formed a significant part of the activities organised by the centre in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, said Worood, adding the workshops run regularly with a fresh theme each course.

The participants took the workshops under the mentorship of artists Abdul Nasser Al Samarae, Reem Al Askesry, Abdullah Al Mannai and Meshaal Al Douri.

“I loved the workshop. It was interesting to learn mosaic art and even more interesting was to know other participants from the Arab world,” said Spanish expatriate Maria Alejos.

It took Maria a month and a lot of patience to finish her glass mosaic inspired by a painting created by a world famous artist.

The exhibition will run for two weeks and some of the artworks are for sale. The Peninsula
