DOHA: The Restoration and Conservation section at Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) yesterday opened the “Revival of the Old Palace” conference at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) auditorium.

Under the patronage of QMA Chairperson H E Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, the two-day conference aims to introduce the Qatari community to the stages of the restoration of the Old Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani and materials used in this process in addition to modern methods conforming to international standards and conventions for the restoration of heritage buildings.

Through its projects, the Restoration and Conservation section seeks to preserve Qatari heritage and national identity by maintaining all the old heritage buildings with all their decorative and artistic elements that reflect their unique architectural aspect, and restoring them to be used in future cultural and tourism events and activities.

“The conference includes more than one presentation by colleagues covering many topics including details on the restoration of the Old Palace, as well as the latest methods of examining the deterioration and structural instability, together with the sensitive use of appropriate materials and techniques backed by state-of-the-art technologies,” said Adel Al Mosalamani, head of the Restoration and conservation section.

The success of the project, he said, would set the benchmark for current and future restoration works.

ZRS Company has prepared the design and operational studies for the restoration of the Old Palace under the supervision of the QMA Restoration and Conservation section. The latter is providing the technicians, workers and restoration specialists, as well as required tools and materials. The Peninsula
