Manila’s newest warship visits Pearl Harbor

MANILA: The newest addition to the country’s naval fleet has reached the renowned Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii over the weekend, the Philippine Navy (PN) said. The BFP Ramon Alcaraz arrived in Pier Bravo 26 last July 12 (US time), according to an article posted on the official website of the PN. The article said the officers and crew of the newest Philippine warship were received by a crowd of Filipino-American navy personnel and civilians led by Captain Jesse James, commander of the Joint Base Hickam Pearl Harbour.

5.0 earthquake hits Mindanao

DAVAO CITY: A moderate magnitude-5.0 earthquake shook parts of southern Philippines early yesterday, the website of US Geological Survey (USGS) said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from local authorities from the quake that struck at 9:28am and was traced 27 kilometres northwest of President Roxas town Mindanao’s North Cotabato province at a depth of 28.9km, the USGS said. The quake was also felt in other areas in North Cotabato, site of a series of quakes that measured magnitude-5.7 last month that wounded several people and destroyed dozens of homes and two bridges, as well as the province of Bukidnon.

Two rebel camps seized

MANILA: The military has discovered two camps in Northern Samar that were believed to have been abandoned by communist rebels who are evading security forces. Captain Amado Gutierrez, spokesman of the Army’s 8th division, said the first camp was discovered last Thursday in the outskirts of Barangay Toog in Lavasares town. The camp was believed to have been vacated by the insurgents three weeks ago and can accommodate 50 people. It has 40 sleeping bunkers, three guard posts, two kitchens and two bathrooms. 

Govt worker dies in ambush

ZAMBOANGA CITY: An employee of the Basilan provincial government was killed while his wife was seriously wounded in an ambush in Isabela City, yesterday. Police identified the man as Omar Hadjatul and his wife as Ambra, both employees of the accounting branch of Basilan’s provincial capital. Investigations showed they were on their way to the provincial capital and on board their motorcycle when they were ambushed by a lone gunman in Barangay Riverside at about 8.15am. agencies
