Doha: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has approved 19 new designs to be followed by all new mosques to be built in the country.

The Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs H E Dr Ghaith bin Mubarak Al Kuwari told reporters yesterday that he expects construction of the new mosques to begin soon. He was speaking at the Ramadan tent of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs held near the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab mosque.

“Designs are available for everyone. The allocation of land will also be done according to the designs,” Dr Al Kuwari said, adding that the government has drawn the financial plans of the mosques for the next three years.

He added the government is sparing no effort in the construction of these mosques and the allocated budget would be increased if a need is felt.

Mosques that will be built with the help of donors or government initiated funds would have to follow these designs.

The designs, which reflect Qatari tradition and Islamic heritage, were made by a committee comprising representatives and experts from several government bodies. The designs are also environment friendly.

In keeping with the designs, the smallest mosque would be able to accommodate 100 people, while the larger ones would be able to house over 5,000 people.

The Minister said that keeping in view the growing population of the country, the government plans to build more mosques.
