Withdrawing child from school criminal offence: HC

Published: 16 Sep 2014 - 11:28 pm | Last Updated: 20 Jan 2022 - 11:45 pm

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Tuesday warned a mother of strict action and termed as a “criminal offence” her withdrawing her child from school.
Justice Manmohan asked the Delhi government to admit the 13-year-old girl child to a school in Green Park area by September 22 and also get her medically examined today.
The woman’s ex-husband had moved the court after she withdrew their child from school.
“It’s a criminal offence to withdraw a child from school. You committed an unpardonable act. I am not taking strict action. But if you withdraw the child again, I will take strict criminal action. I will be monitoring this matter,” the court told the mother.
The court took into note that though the girl was 13 years old, she had only studied till Class 2 and was physically very weak.
The court also sought a status report from the government on the admission and medical examination of the child by September 29, the next date of hearing.
The court also said that under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, it was mandatory for a child between six and 14 years to get education.
Three lakh LED street-lights across Kolkata

Kolkata: After the success of a trial installation of 300 LED street-lights in Kolkata, the energy-saving option will be seen across the entire city soon, an official said yesterday.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) participated in a unique global trial of LED outdoor lighting organised by The Climate Group (TCG), an international NGO, in 2011-2012. Other collaborators included the West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
“After the success of the pilot of our Light Savers project, we are planning to extend it to the entire city which would need about three lakh lights. We are hopeful of implementing it next year. We are in talks with the KMC,” Aditi Dass, director for programmes at TCG, said on the sidelines of a climate change conference organised by the CII here.
