Doha: More than 5,000 people, including students from various schools, participated in the fourth annual Beat Diabetes walkathon organised by the Landmark Group in collaboration with the Qatar Diabetic Association (QDA) at Aspire Zone.
The event commemorated International Diabetic Day, which is held on November 14 every year under the slogan ‘Beat Diabetes’.
The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the diabetes and preventive measures.
A team of experts also informed people about treatments and risks associated with the disease. They said early diagnosis of diabetes was essential to avert risks.
The walkathon saw the launch of mobile clinics equipped with the latest technology. The clinics provided health services and raised awareness about diabetes in areas outside Doha among those most vulnerable to the disease.
The clinics comprised three rooms for check-ups and general guidelines; eyes check-ups; and screening of the feet of patients.
During the walkathon, doctors provided free check-ups for blood sugar levels. Stations were set up to inform people about risks.
Dr Abdullah Humaq, Executive Director of QDA, said the aim of marking Diabetes Day was to reach out to people and enhance their understanding of the disease and its risks.
“On this occasion, for the past three years, we have been lighting up the Aspire Tower with blue light in collaboration with Sports Academy,” he said.
