DOHA: Qatar University’s sixth Life Sciences Symposium (QULSS) under the theme ‘Biotechnology’ discussed about healthcare for cancer, allergies and cardiovascular disorders, food security, sustainable waste water treatment, coastal improvement and mangrove restoration, and technology transfer.

Led by the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the two-day forum drew experts and researchers from institutions from around the world to present on a wide-range of topics and issues and to come up with recommendations for biotechnology development and technology transfer needs and mechanisms.

“This symposium has been growing in popularity since its debut in 2007 which addressed genetic and environmental factors and therapeutic strategies of diabetes. The following years we looked at biological diversity, date palm research, marine environment and sustainable development, and protection of the mangrove ecosystem,” said CAS Dean Dr Eiman Mustafawi.

“We have continued to bring critical issues to the fore and raised the level of dialogue among experts and researchers, and provided our students with an accessible environment to engage with them to share their projects and ideas,” Mustafawi further said.

Faculty from CAS and College of Pharmacy joined presenters from QU Laboratory Animal Research Center, Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar, Total Qatar, ExxonMobil Qatar, Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), Qatar Biotechnology Center, Illinois at Urbana University USA, Sassari University Italy, and Angany Genetics France.
