DOHA: Developing next generation gas and steam turbines is key for the further development of a wide array of industries, ranging from power generation to aviation, H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, the Minister of Energy and Industry said yesterday.
Opening the 3rd Middle East Turbomachinery Symposium (METS 2015) here, Dr Al Sada noted Qatar has been positioned as home to some of the largest operating equipment trains in the Middle East and the world. The symposium comes at a time when the entire industrial spectrum is paying increased attention to the role of technology in enhancing highly reliable, more economic and safer operations. “In a time of rapidly growing interests in clean energy, there is always place for cutting-edge technological innovation to help develop this sector, particularly in the field of wind energy, which is fuel-free source of energy,” he said.
In fact, almost 98 percent of the world’s electricity is generated by gas, steam and hydro turbines. Out of those, 67 percent is generated by the conversion of coal, oil, gas and nuclear fuels, amounting altogether to one-third of the world’s primary energy. With such pivotal importance in the energy industry, one can comfortably say that turbines are at the center of enabling new energy technologies.
Dr Al Sada also opened an exhibition organised as part of METS 2015. The opening ceremony also featured the speeches of METS Advisory Committee Co-Chair Dr Dara Childs, Director of the Turbomachinery Laboratory at Texas A&M University, as well as Simon Younger, Vice President and Joint Interest Manager for ExxonMobil Qatar.
“The many first-of-a-kind accomplishments achieved here in the State of Qatar are prime examples of how advancements in technology can be game changing. The METS is a great opportunity for us to share ideas and exchange best practices — and ExxonMobil Qatar is pleased to be a part of it,” said Simon Younger, Vice President and Joint Interest Manager for ExxonMobil Qatar Inc. Still to come during the symposium are over two days of world-class technical sessions and international networking opportunities in the exhibition hall. Delegates can choose to attend and engage in a combination of 8 discussion groups, 12 tutorials, 12 lectures, and 18 case studies on various topics such as LNG, wet gas, vibration, gas turbines and surge.
Technical sessions also cover topics on maintenance, design, and troubleshooting as well as short case studies describing in the field problems and their real world solutions.
The METS exhibition hosts booths from over 50 leading companies from the Middle East, North America, Asia, and Europe. The hall is open to the public Monday and Tuesday.
