Many outlets violate consumer rules

DOHA: Most outlets that were found violating consumer protection rules last month had not displayed the price lists of products and services.
Some 33 such violations were caught by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce last January out of a total of 130, a press statement said yesterday.
At least 15 violations pertained to false description of products, while in 11 cases the outlets charged more than the tag price for commodities.
In some nine cases caught, promotions were launched by the outlets without seeking permission from the authorities concerned. In at least eight cases, the shops did not display the prices of commodities before promotion and only post-promotion rates were displayed.
In some cases, commodities for which promotion was announced were mixed with normal products so customers were left confused.
The ministry statement said that punishments for flouting the provisions of Law Number 8 of 2008 (Protection of Consumer Rights) vary from closure of an outlet temporarily to fines ranging from QR5, 000 ($1,373) to QR30,000 ($8,238.36).
