KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai yesterday expressed grief over the Boston marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 100 in the US city. He denounced terrorist attacks and said: “Having suffered terrorist attacks and civilian casualties for years, our people feel better the pain and suffering from such incidents.”
22 rebels killed in Afghanistan
Kabul: Afghan National Army 1st Special Operations Kandak commandos killed 22 rebels and rounded dozens during an operation in Bati Kot district, Nangarhar province, sources said. They conducted the operation to locate a Taliban commander in the Gundayn village. The National Directorate of Security is holding the detainees for questioning. No civilian casualties or structural damage were reported.
Cop among four gunned down
Islamabad: Four people, including a policeman, were gunned down in various areas of the metropolis, Geo News said yesterday. Javed Iqbal was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Bilal Colony area of Korangi as he was waiting for a bus at a stop. A man was killed in Qayyumabad, another near a cinema in Pak Colony and a youth was shot dead in PIB Colony.
Election convoy bomb kills four
QUETTA: A roadside bomb struck an election convoy of Pakistan’s main opposition party yesterday, killing four people, sources said. Sanaullah Zehri, head of the Pakistan Muslim League-N in southwestern Baluchistan province, was on the campaign trail for the May 11 general election when the blast hit his convoy in Khuzdar district, 350km south of provincial capital Quetta. Zehri survived the attack but his son, brother, nephew and their guard were all killed. “An improvised explosive device went off as Zehri left his home to campaign in Khuzdar,” the sources added.
Seven troops die in blast
MIRANSHAH: A bomb attack killed seven Pakistani soldiers and wounded 12 others yesterday in Pakistan’s North Waziristan district, known as a strong bastion of Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants, bordering Afghanistan, officials said. The bomb struck on a road under construction near Miranshah, the main town. The soldiers were providing security to workers building the road between Miranshah and Ghulam Ali.
Gas pipeline blown up
Islamabad: A 16-inch diameter pipeline was blown up at about 8am near Maripur Road in Saddar Town in Pakistan, Sui Southern Gas Company General Manager Mushtaq Siddiqui said yesterday. A company team stopped the leakage and was repairing the damage.
Islamabad-Kabul ties in focus
