DOHA: The highly competitive Qatar Stars League came to its close for another season as Al Rayyan lifted the QSL title for the first time in 21 years. Later, El Jaish lifted their second ever Qatar Cup. While in the Workers Cup, Taleb Group won the Workers Cup in dramatic style edging out GCC in a penalty shootout.
“Winning a trophy in front of cheering crowds is what I dreamt of when I started playing football,” said Jerry Ayitey, the experienced Ghanaian player minutes after he had slotted in his side’s first penalty in the 3-1 shootout win against a valiant Gulf Contracting at Al Ahli Stadium.
Looking back on his side’s journey to the final, the tough tackling defender identified one key moment in his sides quest to lift the Workers Cup crown.
“The icing on the cake was the meeting with FIFA President Infantino in the semi-final. It was unbelievable when Mr. Infantino came on to the pitch while we were celebrating our semi-final victory.
I went up to the President, shook his hand and told him that this was a childhood dream come true” noted Ayitey when asked about his meeting with the head of the world game. Reflecting on the final against GCC Ayitey was pleased that his side remained tough at the back throughout the match “It was tough in regular time,” he said.
“GCC are a good side and dominated possession. I had to be at my very best at the back and I am proud we did not concede.”
