MANILA: An American deep-sea diver who helped in the search and retrieval of the body of the late interior and local government secretary Jesse Robredo was shot dead in a subdivision in Las Piñas City on Thursday. Matt Caldwell, who helped recover Robredo after a plane crashed off Masbate last August, was killed during an altercation with a guard at Hamilton Heights. Caldwell came from a meeting with the agency’s auxiliary divers when he figured in an altercation and was shot dead.
Schoolgirl, drug pusher nabbed
MANILA: The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency arrested a suspected drug pusher and a female student in a sting operation in Iloilo. It said Marion Cuerbo, 55, of Barangay Bulaqueña, Estancia, Iloilo and 19-year-old Analiza Abejar, of Purok Sigay, Barangay 2, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental were arrested on August 13. Three pieces of small heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing white crystalline substance suspected to be shabu were also seized.
New early warning device
MANILA: The Army has developed a device that could serve as an early warning system for disaster-prone areas. The MLX4 manpack public address system will be distributed to field units to alert communities and minimise casualties. “The system is portable and can help save lives because it will enable our soldiers to provide warnings to people,” First Lt Gemira Dy, public affairs chief of the Civil-Military Operations Group, said. The device will be tested this month. The army plans to initially distribute 416 units nationwide.
Leftist rebels kidnap soldier
DAVAO CITY: Leftist rebels kidnapped a soldier in the southern Philippines, the military said. Corporal Salman Abbas was caught by New People’s Army at a checkpoint along a village road in Mahayahay village, San Luis town, in Mindanao’s Agusan del Sur province around 11am on Tuesday.
