DOHA: Road contractors who fail to meet requirements of the Work Zone Traffic Management Guide launched by Public Works Authority (Ashghal) would face the risk of loosing any projects in future, a senior official warned yesterday.
Developed by Ashghal to replace the Traffic Control and Road Works Guide, new guidelines were introduced in March and are mandated in all Ashghal contracts. Existing projects are given six months to comply with new requirements. The guidelines make it compulsory for contractors to ensure that there is enough visibility for motorists to see warning signs: Improved road signs in yellow should be displayed; speed limits will be enforced strictly and monitored by radar and surveillance cameras and they should also ensure safety of pedestrians at work zones
“We launched Work Zone Traffic Management and now it’s being implemented. All our contractors are gradually implementing it and it will improve road safety,” Jalal Yousef Salhi, Director of Infrastructure Affairs at Ashghal, told The Peninsula on the sidelines of second Annual Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Road Safety Forum Qatar 2013.
“If a contractor is not following the manual, they will not get anymore projects,” he said.
