JERUSALEM: Palestinians reportedly fired a mortar round into southern Israel yesterday in the first attack since the August 26 ceasefire, without causing any casualties, even as Israel confirmed that it had signed up to a UN-brokered deal to facilitate reconstruction of the shattered coastal strip while keeping materials out of the hands of Hamas militants.
An Israeli army statement said the mortar round struck the Eshkol region bordering the Strip.
In Gaza, a spokesman for Hamas said the group and others wanted the three-week old ceasefire to hold.
He wondered whether the attack as claimed by Israel had taken place.
